Pulling On The Lead

Lots of dogs don’t walk calmly on a lead. This can make for a very stressful walk, especially if the dog then feels enabled to lunge at other dogs or create havoc in some other way. Teaching a dog to walk at heel is the key to a stress-free walk.

Pulling on the lead must be the most common day-to-day annoyance that dog owners face. But why do they do it? And how can we stop it?

Dominance.

It’s possible the dog thinks it’s leading the walk. This can never be a good situation and can result in several other undesirable behaviours.

Is your dog an explorer?

Fairly benign in itself, but a large dog forging ahead makes for an uncomfortable walk.

Who’s making the decisions?

If your dog is out in front of you it’s entirely possible that they are making decisions that it might be better were left to you. Should I chase that squirrel? Do I need to bark at that dog? Do I need to get excited about that person walking towards us? It’s best if the human makes these decisions and that means the dog isn’t out in front pulling on the lead.

More often than not pulling on the lead can be resolved by building the engagement from the dog to the owner. There are simple exercises we do to achieve this and once the dog is more engaged this improved relationship can be reflected in so many other areas of the walk and how the dog behaves in the home that it will pay you back with interest.
