Recall Problems

Recall is the big one. Some dogs just don’t seem keen on the idea. So how do you interrupt a dog and bring him back to you and not greet the other dog, chase wildlife, run across the road or do any number of things you would rather they didn’t?

Build the relationship.

The bottom line is that your dog must want to come back to you more than investigate the other distractions in the environment. To make you bigger in the dog’s mind we need to build that relationship.

Teach your dog a strong recall.

This might seem obvious but there’s a technique to teaching recall, get this bit right and you’re off to a good start, get it wrong and you’ll be swimming upstream from the get-go.

Until you’re confident keep your dog close.

Imagine there’s a piece of invisible elastic between you and your dog. The stronger that elastic the further you can allow the dog away from you because the greater the pull will be for him to return. Until you know the elastic is strong enough, keep your dog close, call them back from five meters, then ten, don’t let them get so far away that you become a distant memory when a distraction appears.

There’s no magic wand with this one. To build a good recall takes time and work but using the right techniques will help you get there as fast as possible. It is worth remembering when teaching any obedience, that little and often is the key. Teaching four sessions of five minutes will be a lot more productive than one twenty minute session. And always end an obedience session on a positive note.
